Agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana’s economy, employing a significant percentage of the population and serving as the bedrock of food security. Yet, despite its importance, the sector continues to face challenges ranging from inadequate access to technology and markets, to land degradation and climate change. The CITEG Agricultural Department was founded to address these pressing concerns and to reposition agriculture as a modern, profitable, and sustainable sector for national growth.
The department works directly with farmers, agribusiness entrepreneurs, and policy stakeholders to promote best practices in farming. It provides training in sustainable agriculture, introduces modern farming technologies, and facilitates access to financing and markets for smallholder farmers. Recognizing the threat posed by illegal mining (galamsey) to arable lands and water bodies, the department also advocates for stronger environmental protections and land reclamation initiatives.
One of its flagship missions is to encourage youth involvement in agriculture by rebranding the sector as innovative and lucrative. This includes promoting agribusiness start-ups, mechanization, and value addition, which not only create jobs but also strengthen Ghana’s economy.
The department also plays a role in food security by supporting policies and community projects that boost local food production. It envisions a Ghana where agricultural productivity is high, rural livelihoods are improved, and the country becomes a net exporter of food rather than an importer.
By blending advocacy, training, and direct intervention, the CITEG Agricultural Department stands as a vital partner in Ghana’s development agenda. It recognizes that without sustainable agriculture, economic stability and social well-being cannot be fully achieved.
